Why so much red?

Red often dominates because it draws the eye on linen or pale cotton, and because in many contexts it carries connotations of life and protection — without being an absolute rule for every piece.

Black structures the design, heightens contrast and can mark mourning or the gravity of the moment, depending on the region. White or natural linen recalls the raw material and the sobriety of the ground.

Dyes, threads and washing have their own history: a red can shift, fade, or mingle with blue or green according to local recipes.

Avoid explaining a piece through a single “meaning of colour”: always cross the visual description with ethnographic context and type of use.
